We faithfully follow God the Father in His plan for transforming the world by believing, living, and sharing Christ's love.
History of The Verona GMC
Until 1971 there were two churches in Verona, both of which were the forefathers of the present Verona Methodist Church. The Evangelical United Brethren being located in the east of town in Montgomery County and the Methodist at the West end in Preble County. The history of each church follows:
United Brethren
The first account of a United Brethren Church in the vicinity of West Baltimore (Verona's name before 1850) is of a log church somewhere in the first mile south of the present church. This was around 1839.
In about 1850 the United Brethren Church organized a society in town holding meetings in a little shop. In 1885 the congregation built a brick church east of the county line on land donated by Peter Snyder. Rev. Downey was the pastor. This church, known as the 'old church', had a dividing rail separating the men from the women, with separate doors to enter by. In 1890, the rail was removed and the church remodeled to include a belfry. This church was used until 1906 when the present building was constructed at a cost of $4500.00. The church was dedicated June 30, 1907.
After the merger of the Evangelical and the United Brethren denominations, it became known as Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1956 an addition of classrooms and some remodeling were done. This new part was dedicated on February 10, 1957. After the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren in 1968, it became known as Christ United Methodist Church. This building is the site of our present Verona United Methodist Church. The names of the pastors having served this church are: N.D. Bevis, James L. Boyer, Robert Copeland, P.O. Deever, A.C. Witham, Clarence Kimmell, J.L. Amstrong, J.C. Herbert, Ivan Jenkins, and Robert L. Anderson.

With church growth, the building was enlarged and rebuilt in 1920-21. Further improvements were made in 1949 and later in 1952 it was completely redecorated.
In 1968 with the merger of the Evangelical Brethren and Methodist Churches, it became known as Hope United Methodist Church. The congergation gave up their building and in 1970 at a uniting service, they became one congregation to form the new Verona United Methodist Church in the present location.
